Most propane BBQ grills are versatile and easy to use and operate. By reading the owner's manual for your particular propane BBQ, and by following a few basic safety tips, you will be able to light it consistently.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Propane grill
  • Owner's manual for BBQ grill
  • Burner shield
  • Propane tank
  • Click lighter
  1. Step 1

Light a propane BBQ grill by first attaching the tank according the manufacturer's instructions, which should be listed in the owner's manual. Ensure that the seal is tight around the connection, and that you cannot hear or smell the gas escaping.

  2. Step 2

Install the burner shield over the actual heating elements before you light your propane BBQ grill. The shield is a metal plate with vents that fits directly over the burning elements so that the flames are evenly distributed throughout the interior of the grill, making for more efficient cooking.

  3. Step 3

Turn on the gas by first opening the valve on the propane tank, and then turning the gas knob on the BBQ grill according to the instructions in the owner's manual. You should be able to hear a slight hissing sound as the gas flows through the holes in the heating elements. If there are two distinct heating elements with two knobs, light each one separately, instead of at the same time.

  4. Step 4

Use the built-in igniter or an independent click lighter to light your propane BBQ grill. Let the propane flow for just a second or two with the gas knob turned to low, and apply the flame in a safe manner, keeping hands and face away from the flame.

  5. Step 5

Install the metal grill once you have lit the propane BBQ. Take care to watch your fingers as you position the grill over the top of the flames so that you don't burn yourself.

  6. Step 6

Close the lid to allow the heat inside the propane BBQ grill to increase. Once you have adjusted the burners to the desired heat, you'll be ready to cook.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many outdoor cooks prefer to use an independent "click" lighter with a long body to light the flame on a propane BBQ grill, especially since the built-in igniters can wear out easily or work inconsistently.
  • When turning off the propane BBQ grill, turn the valve on the tank to its "off" position first, and then turn the gas knob on the front of the grill off. This allows you to avoid having propane trapped in the gas line between the tank and the grill.
