How to Buy Accessories for an Outdoor BBQ Grill

If you start with a basic outdoor grill (whether charcoal or gas), you will eventually need to buy accessories to make the cooking experience easier and more productive. Choosing the right items can be a challenge, especially if you have no experience shopping for them or if your budget is limited. There are, however, some accessories that are essential for a great BBQ cooking experience.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Read your outdoor BBQ grill manual first. You should find a list of possible accessories there, with details as to what you can add to your grill and what is not recommended. Certain models may allow for a variety of add-ons, while others are limited.
Step2
Buy online from a manufacturer like Weber (see Resources below). Not only is the selection larger, but you will have a better chance to find good discounts and deals. Visit official outdoor retailers first, but also look for companies offering wholesale items or replacement parts (most of them will allow you to buy accessories under certain conditions).
Step3
Keep it reasonable. Too many accessories can make your outdoor grill cumbersome and difficult to use. Rather than buying too many things at once, start with a few and see if they actually improve the process. If the answer is yes, then keep adding items as needed.
Step4
Choose accessories that will make the cooking process easier. A larger cooking tray, a tool set or a fluorescent BBQ grill light may seem like obvious choices, but many people overlook these items in favor of other, more impressive items that may not be so useful.
Step5
Invest in a good thermometer. Depending on what type of food you cook in your outdoor grill, a digital thermometer may be your best choice. Thermometers are especially important for gas grills, which cook faster and may burn the meat if not properly supervised.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't forget the essentials. A large oven mitt (one that covers part of your forearm), an apron, grilling tongs and a set of skewers can significantly improve your outdoor cooking experience for just a little investment.
  • Once you cover all the essentials, you can look for specific accessories that fit the type of cooking you do most. Basting brushes, sauce bowls and utensils holder may make the whole experience easier.
  • Don't get reeled into buying every accessory you see at the store. If you do most of your grilling while camping, for example, many of the items sold as accessories will actually make the process more difficult, as you will need to carry and set up more things.
