Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky has been the site of the Kentucky Derby for over a century. If forms the first leg of the prestigious Triple Crown and has seen champion thoroughbreds from War Admiral to Secretariat claim glory on its track. Racing enthusiasts may wish to visit the stables at the Kentucky Derby, which features over 1,400 stalls and a chance to view the horses training.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Contact the Kentucky Derby Museum, which is located at Churchill Downs. It contains a large exhibit space covering the history of the Derby and thoroughbred horse racing in general. It also offers guided tours of both the stables and paddock area, available for the cost of admission. Behind the scenes walking tours are available as well. The Museum's number is (502) 637-7097.
Step2
Ask about specific horses at the stables. Different thoroughbreds occupy Churchill Downs at different times, ranging from up-and-coming 2 year olds to retired champions enjoying the good life. If you have a specific horse you're hoping to see during your visit to the stables, it pays to ask and see if he will be there during your visit.
Step3
Arrange for accommodations. If you live near Louisville, you can drive to the Downs to visit the stables, but otherwise, you will need to arrange for a hotel. Many hotels in the area offer tour packages that include the Kentucky Derby Museum, which will allow you to visit the stables as well as enjoying some of the other tourists sites in the region.
Step4
Arrive early. Though tours are held throughout the day, Churchill Downs contains a special majesty in the early morning, when the mist rises off the grass and the horses begin their workouts. Early tours are available starting at 7:00 am, which makes the ideal time to visit the stables.
Step5
Plan on at spending at least 3 hours at Churchill Downs. The visit to the stable takes at least 2 hours and the museum exhibits will take another hour at least. Expect traffic to be busier on race days when events are taking place on the track, and plan for more time for your visit during such periods.

Tips & Warnings

  • The stables themselves are off-limits to the public during the Kentucky Derby itself. Unless you're a jockey, a trainer or an owner, you won't be allowed to visit them. The best option to select a time other than the Derby, when Churchill Downs is open to the public and you can visit the stables with ease.
