Horse racing fans do not often think of New Mexico when they think of great racetracks. The tracks at Sunland Park have been designed to excite the small but loyal group of local racing fans in New Mexico since the first race in 1959. You need to find a comfortable place and study up on regular jockeys to follow horse racing at Sunland Park Racetracks.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Look up at the tote board at Sunland Park Racetracks before and after each race to track results. The tote board is located on the infield at Sunland Park and updates times, horse numbers and other information on a regular basis.
Step2
Break down the complexities of net-pool betting used by Sunland Park Racetracks for all wagers. Net-pool betting takes the net total of all wagers on a particular race at Sunland Park instead of the gross total and divides this number by the number of victors.
Step3
Register for the Sunland Racing Rewards Club if you get interested in horse racing. You can build up a high number of points while you follow daily races. These points are redeemable for discounted meals and merchandise from the Sunland Casino.
Step4
Enjoy live races at Sunland Park Racetracks while you play craps, roulette and poker at the adjacent casino. The casino has viewing areas and closed circuit television in each section for avid horse racing fans.
Step5
Travel to Sunland Park in March to see the track's largest event. The WinStar Derby takes place each spring, with tens of thousands traveling throughout the Southwest to watch competitive horse racing.
Step6
Study the history of local stable owners residing at Sunland Park to inform your horse racing experience. The track hosts open houses, tours and other opportunities for horse racing fans to meet trainers and owners who love to speak about the sport.
Step7
Befriend racing professionals, big spenders and fellow fans to gain access to VIP areas at Sunland Park. Outside areas like the VIP tent, as well as the Signature Showroom, place restrictions on access by the general public without an invitation.
Step8
View the Winner's Circle and the paddock area from a comfortable seat in the Turf Club. The Turf Club has a limited number of indoor seats for serious racing fans who want to get a full view of the track.

Tips & Warnings

  • Buy a copy of "Sunland Park Today" to follow horse racing at the tracks with the help of experienced handicappers. The "Sunland Park Today" is the track's in-house magazine featuring information on stable owners and upcoming events. You can purchase this magazine at guest service booths and betting windows throughout the day.
