How to Buy Soccer Referee Gear
If you're planning to referee a recreational or competitive soccer league, you'll need to purchase equipment that makes you stand out safely on the field. While referee gear is often neglected by soccer specialty stores, some apparel shops and specialty websites carry everything refs need to officiate a game.

1
Buy a sturdy, sufficiently loud whistle and lanyard to keep it around your neck. Arguably the most important piece of referee equipment, you'll want to select a whistle that can be heard above the din of a crowd.
-
2
Check with the league you're officiating for to find out what regulations are in place for referee uniforms and gear. While we often think of the traditional black-and-white garb, many leagues and soccer programs require referees to wear unique colors or specific designs.
-
3
Buy jerseys and shorts constructed of a lightweight, breathable material. While you can always layer if you're refereeing outside on a cold night, you'll want your uniform to wick away moisture and regulate temperature as you run up and down the field.
-
4
Look for practical referee shorts designed with Velcro-closure pockets to hold keys, coins, or yellow and red cards.
-
5
Purchase a rain/snow jacket if you'll be officiating in inclement weather. Select a wind- and water-resistant jacket with a lining and drawstring hood to keep you warm and comfortable.
-
6
Buy a set of durable, plastic yellow and red cards and a zippered pouch or wallet to hold them in. Many referee wallets also contain a scorecard and a holder for a small pencil or pen.
-
7
Purchase a lightweight, breathable turf shoe. Referees run as much, if not more, than many players, so you'll want to make sure your footwear is comfortable and can stand up to the officiating surface.
-
8
Buy soccer socks to match your referee outfit, making sure they fit comfortably with your footwear and are constructed from a breathable fabric that stays dry and allows air to circulate.

Tips & Warnings
Purchase a pair of gloves if you'll be refereeing during foul weather. Just make sure you can sufficiently grip your whistle and the ball with the gloves you select.
If you ref regularly, consider buying a backpack or duffel to carry your gear from game to game.
