While socks are not considered the most glamorous part of a wardrobe, most cyclists will agree that their socks are a critical part of their gear. Cycling socks are designed to be lightweight, quick drying and less bulky than other athletic socks. Whether you're on the road every day or you're a recreational cyclist, a carefully selected pair of cycling socks may become your new best friend.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take your cycling shoes with you when you buy socks. The most important part about buying cycling socks is making sure they allow optimal fit for your shoes in order to maximize comfort and pedaling power.

  2. Step 2

Choose your style. Cycling socks come in a huge variety of colors and designs, from more neutral to crazy.

  3. Step 3

Decide what length of socks you prefer. While cycling socks used to be available in only no-show and low-rise styles, higher-rise styles are making a comeback for those who prefer some calf coverage. A higher-rise style may be perfect for you if you're riding in cool climates.

  4. Step 4

Look for socks made from a series of polyester blends designed to wick moisture away from the feet and dry quickly. If you'll be riding in cooler climates, buy Merino-wool socks. This type of wool is ultralight, soft and warm but breathable.

  5. Step 5

Look for seamless socks. While it may not sound like a big deal, a small seam can cause big blisters or uncomfortable chafing during long rides. Seamless design is a must if you ride regularly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Buy a pair of overshoes, or "booties," if you'll be riding in cool or wet weather. Even if you have wool cycling socks, it is good to keep your shoes covered in rain and mud.
  • If you don't want to throw down a significant amount for a pair of socks, you may find some good deals at auction websites and sporting-goods stores, especially for last year's designs or grab-bag colors.
  • It is a good idea to start try a pair of socks on with your cycling shoes. Socks and shoes go hand in hand when it comes to cycling comfort. Make sure that pair fits well before you buy several pairs of socks.
  • Stay away from cotton socks. Cotton tends to hold moisture near your feet, leading to an uncomfortable ride.
