Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Purchase a flag mounting kit that includes a flag, pole and pole bracket. This is usually more cost effective than buying all three elements separately.
Step2
Select your flag for durability if it will be out in the wind or any inclement weather. Flags made out of nylon are the sturdiest and most durable available on the market, but reinforced polyester flags are recommended for areas that experience frequent high winds. Additionally, flags that attach to the pole with a pole sleeve instead of grommets might cut down on tearing due to wind.
Step3
Visit a reputable online vendor such as Flag Store USA or United States Flag Store (see Resources below). These vendors offer a seemingly endless selection of flags of different sizes and fabrics.
Step4
Buy a flag at a local hardware store if you don't want to wait to have one shipped to you. Although flags are generally stocked year round, the summer months are best for buying a flag, as there are often sales coinciding with July 4.
Step5
Buy a variety of flags for your various needs. For example, you may want smaller ones to place of soldiers' grave sites, and larger ones to display in and around your home. Online vendors often offer discounts if you buy flags in bulk.
Step6
Learn about the history behind the flag and the legislation passed regarding it. USA-Flag-Site.org provides the flag's history, flag etiquette and a forum that answers any of your flag related questions (see Resources below).
