Between family and work, many of us have little extra time to donate to the needy around us. However, on Memorial Day you can give a monetary gift to many different organizations that wouldn't be able to exist without generous donations.

Soldiers Angels is an organization dedicated to reminding soldiers currently in active service that Americans support them at home (see Resources below). They have an "adopt a soldier" program that lasts, on average, from 6 to 12 months. To be matched with a soldier, donors must commit to sending their soldier one letter per week and at least one package per month. The website has lists of suggested items to put in packages and donors also have the option to buy and send ready-made packages. You also have the option to make a simple monetary donation, which is a great choice for Memorial Day.

The American Legion Auxiliary has a variety of causes, but primarily they exist to assist veterans and families of veterans (see Resources below). They help soldiers and their families transition back to normalcy after they return from deployment. Job assistance, money and transportation are also provided for any handicapped, homeless or financially suffering veterans. Suffering widows and orphans of soldiers are cared for as well through this organization's programs. Donations can be made to the various programs on their website.

The U.S. Department of Veteran's Affairs provides veterans with health care benefits and advocacy, among other services (see Resources below). On their website, click on Volunteer (under Health care tab) to request information about the monetary needs of a veterans facility in your area.
4
The Military Order of the Purple Heart Service Foundation is dedicated to providing assistance to wounded and handicapped veterans and widows and orphans of veterans (see Resources below). They accept donations of vehicles, used clothing and money. You may give your donation in honor of a veteran.
5
The Disabled American Veterans organization exists to make certain that disabled veterans and their families receive the benefits that they are entitled to, improve legislation and provide transportation and other services to the disabled veterans (see Resources below). You can give either a one-time donation in honor of Memorial Day or a monthly donation.
Tips & Warnings
If you have children, involve them in choosing a non-profit to donate to. Soldiers Angels is a great project to get children involved in, as they can help pick out items to put in a care package and write notes to the adopted soldier.
Before making a donation to any organization or non-profit, check with the Better Business Bureau to make sure they are legitimate.
Non-profit organizations rely on alternative sources of funding. Donations are usually a major contribution in helping a non-profit to cover the cost...
