A European massage is the ideal way to make your mother feel young again in as little as 1 hour. A good massage can improve circulation and even increase the production of endorphins. Most day spas and health clubs offer them, but a spa is more luxurious. Some day spas even offer mother-and-daughter specials on Mother's Day, which are sure to please both of you.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Credit card or check
  1. Step 1

Call to book an appointment 1 month in advance.

  2. Step 2

Try a partial massage if your mom is a bit skittish about the full-body thing.

  3. Step 3

Schedule 1 1/2 hours of pampering if this is your mother's first experience with European massage. This will allow her to become comfortable and relax. Longer sessions also offer more effective therapy.

  4. Step 4

Verify that the European massage therapist is trained, licensed and experienced. Many states require about 500 hours of classroom training and successful completion of an exam. Many also require CPR certification.

  5. Step 5

Make an appointment for any day during the week after Mother's Day if you want to surprise your mother. It may be difficult to get an appointment for the actual Mother's Day holiday. Sneak a peek at your mother's calendar before making the appointment, so she won't have to reschedule.

  6. Step 6

Book with your credit card or pay by check. If you choose to pay by check, mail it at least 1 week before the appointment.

  7. Step 7

Book taxi service, or even a limousine, to and from the appointment. Most taxi companies accept advance bookings. Don't forget to give your mother the phone number, so she can call when she is ready to leave.

  8. Step 8

Tell your mother to arrive about 15 minutes early to complete any paperwork and address any concerns she may have. Inform the staff yourself if your mother has health problems and does not communicate them easily.

  9. Step 9

Explain to your mother the importance of communicating with the therapist if she has osteoporosis, fibromyalgia or some other painful disease and finds the European massage uncomfortably aggressive.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider making sure your mother's state of relaxation lasts by cleaning her house and cooking dinner while she is being massaged. Alternatively, hire a maid service for a day and take your mother out to dinner.
  • You can find a spa with which to book at the SpaFinder website (see Resources below).
  • Massage is not recommended for people with open wounds, extremely thin skin or fragile arteries, or those in acute pain. If your mother is prone to blood clots or has deep-vein thrombosis, make sure she sees her doctor before getting a massage.
