Step 1
Determine whether your mother likes hiking in nature or the ultimate in pampering. A spa resort, or destination spa, in the country will likely offer well-kept grounds and scenic walking trails in addition to a sauna, pool, restaurant, gift shop and various beauty treatments or regimens.
-
Step 2
Decide how much you can afford to spend. A smaller but equally luxurious spa resort, with fewer services, may be the ideal choice if you can't afford a top-rated resort. One full day at a spa resort represents a considerable expense.
-
Step 3
Ask friends and neighbors whether they have a preferred spa and find out why they like it. Advice from someone who frequents a spa may be better than a five-star rating.
-
Step 4
Locate a resort on a spa directory like the SpaFinder website (see Resources below).
-
Step 5
Book a getaway spa package, which allows your mom to choose her own style of pampering, or ask for specific services, such as a full-body European massage, body wrap or complete facial, which your mother is probably too frugal to buy for herself.
-
Step 6
Book the Mother's Day getaway 6 weeks in advance. Use a credit card to pay for the appointment, which is quicker and easier than writing and mailing a check.
-
Step 7
Call the spa you chose, and ask it to send a certificate noting the date of the reservation. You can include it in your Mother's Day card.
-
Step 8
Book transportation if the spa resort you select is more than 15 miles from your mother's home. Taxi companies and limousine services will accommodate your request, or you can drive her yourself.
-
Step 9
Make sure your mother packs two changes of comfortable but stylish clothing for wearing after exercising, swimming, or walking. Remind her to pack her makeup, all medications, any cosmetics she can't live without and special items, such as contact lens solution.
