Things You'll Need:
- 802.11b or 802.11g wireless network card
- Wireless router
-
Step 1
Log onto Boston's WiFi website (see Resources below). Boston's municipal WiFi website contains the details you'll need concerning the city's WiFi plans. You can find out if coverage is available in your area and how to sign up.
-
Step 2
Go public! Boston residents can already access WiFi in 28 public libraries and in several of the city's Main Street Districts. Plans are also underway to provide WiFi access along portions of the Rose Kennedy Greenway.
-
Step 3
Go to the ivory tower. Boston is the center of some of the world's leading universities, many of which already have large WiFi clouds covering their campuses and local areas. Just take your laptop to the campus of Harvard University, Boston College or Boston University and share the free network with some of Boston's finest academicians.
-
Step 4
Call your city representative. Mayor Menino created a Wireless Task Force that is co-chaired by Joyce Plotkin, Rick Burnes and Jim Cash. These members from academia, business and the community, are determined to create the best route to wireless Internet access for Boston. The city's representatives are working hard to extend coverage to your area--contact their offices and find out when you can sign up.
-
Step 5
Take a coffee break! Boston is bustling with businesses that offer free WiFi access to their customers. Just try to sign up for a connection at a local cafe or restaurant. A free network could be just around the corner from your home. Check out the Wifi Hotspot list to find a connection (see Resources below).
