Hair bows are so cute on little girls. Plastic or metal hair clips for bow making can be found at most fabric and craft stores for a great price. With a little glue, ribbon and creativity, you can make dozens of your own bows at just a fraction of the store-bought cost. Make a bow to match everything your child owns.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Satin or gross grain ribbon, 1 inch in width. For a medium-sized bow, get 3/4 of a yard.
  • Hair clips from craft store
  • Needle and thread
  • Hot glue gun with clear glue sticks
  • Clear nail polish

Step1
For a medium-sized bow, cut about 3/4 of a yard of ribbon. Cut the ends at an angle. Cut another 2-inch piece of ribbon and set aside for the knot at the center.
Step2
With the long piece of ribbon, bring one end toward the center to make a loop. Bring the other end toward the center. There should be 2 loops, one on each side.
Step3
Overlap the ends of the ribbon past the center and below the loops to make a bow shape. The ends of the ribbon should be hanging down as 'tails' below the loops. Adjust the ribbon until it looks like the bow you want and then using a needle and thread, make several stitches in the center to hold the loops in place.
Step4
Wrap the short piece of ribbon around the center of the bow to hide the stitches and form the fake knot. Turn the raw edges of the short ribbon under and stitch the edges together on the underside of the bow.
Step5
Using hot glue, glue the bow to the clip. Cover the surface of the clip with the bow. Paint a very small amount of clear nail polish over the bare edges of the tails of the bow to avoid fraying.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add extra pieces of ribbon in different colors, sizes and textures to the bow for interest.
  • Try gluing or sewing a plain or decorative button to the center of the bow when complete.
