  1. How To Be An Effective IT Person

    • 1

Being in charge of your company's IT needs is a big responsibility. Big tech skills are needed but people skills are needed too! First, let's talk email.

    • 2

Most people in offices use email almost all the time. Why not send an email out once in awhile with handy little tips for Office, iTunes or just little productivity things staff can do to make thier lives a little simpler? After all, you're the guru, they look to you!

    • 3

Every IT person has a handful of people that are always having trouble, more so then anyone else. By keeping a spreadsheet of their calls and problems, you might be able to figure out what their problem is before they need help!

    • 4

Take a walk in the afternoons a few times a week and stop by the offices of people you have helped recently as a friendly follow-up. By getting to know you, people will feel better about asking questions, and you'll find out if they still need help.

    • 5

Try learning how to break down technology into bite sized pieces. Being able to explain what had happened to an angry office worker so they can follow you can not only calm them down but actually make them feel like they understand the workings of their computer better.

    • 6

Whenever someone asks you for help, show them, if you can, what to do to fix it themselves. It empowers the worker and may help give you time to work on other bigger projects. It also helps th worker feel better about asking for help!

    • 7

Have a sense of humor about your job. Getting angry makes people avoid you and it also adds to your stress. Laugh instead of kicking that printer!

Tips & Warnings

  • Being friendly to the staff of your job makes for a better overall IT experience for you and the staff.

  • A lot of people are fearful of asking for help. If they know you won't come over and make them feel bad, then they will ask more often instead of letting problems fester.
