Scooters are an exciting and economical way to tour around Taiwan. The island's climate makes scooters drivable year-round. Rental agencies in Taiwan can provide scooters on a daily, weekly and even on a monthly basis. The rates are usually very reasonable. Read on to learn more.

Things You'll Need:

  • Valid international or Taiwanese driver's license
  1. Step 1

Make sure you have a valid license. Scooter shops in Taiwan would prefer if you had a Taiwanese license. However, rental agents understand that some foreigners are only in Taiwan for a limited time and have no means of obtaining a license. In this case, your passport or Alien Registration Card might do the trick. Scooter rental shops in Taiwan are often in close proximity to one another. If one turns you down, walk on down the road and try your luck somewhere else.

  2. Step 2

Try to visit a rental place on recommendation. While not the norm, unscrupulous rental agencies have been known to scam renters by "stealing" the scooter in the middle of the night using an extra set of keys. If this happens, the agency will feign surprise and ask the renter to cough up a huge amount of money in damages.

  3. Step 3

If you don't know any rental agencies, head to the city's train station, where many scooter rental agencies cluster.

  4. Step 4

Choose a size that is right for you. Rental scooters are usually 50cc, 100cc, 125cc, or 150cc. If you're only planning on touring a short distance--say around a town--for the day, then a 50cc should be just fine. If you're planning on spending a week or longer in one place, a 100cc is better.

  5. Step 5

Confirm the extent of your responsibilities and obligations with the owner. Will you be held responsible for theft? Is insurance provided? Don't turn that key until you know what you're getting yourself into.
