XinJiang is a vast region in China’s developing west. Populated by Han Chinese and people of Turkic origin, XinJiang is a wonderful mix of cultures. Travelers may ride speedy modern buses down highways running parallel to ancient Silk Road trading routes or enjoy a tasty lamb kebab in one of XinJiang’s many open air markets. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Chinese visa

Step1
Before traveling to XinJiang check with your doctor to see if you’ll require any inoculations.
Step2
XinJiang is in China which means you will require a Chinese visa. Visit the Chinese embassy in your country for official details.
Step3
For most people, their first stop in China is a major city such as Beijing, Shanghai or Hong Kong. However, China is a big place and these cities are nowhere near XinJiang. A plane ride is at least three hours. For those adventurous souls, it is possible to take a 46-hour train ride all the way from Beijing to XinJiang’s capital Urumqi. Factor the additional costs of these tickets into your plans.
Step4
Decide what time of year suits your travel plans. Winters can be bitterly cold in XinJiang while summers can be very hot.
Step5
Bring enough money. There are limited places in XinJiang to change money. If you are planning on being away from large cities make sure you have enough cash. Credit cards are rarely accepted and travelers checks may not be changeable unless at a major bank.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not discuss politics. Politics is a sensitive issue in XinJiang. There has been a separatist movement for decades. Violent demonstrations occasionally occur. Steer far away from any political activity.
