Things You'll Need:
- Resume
- Positive attitude
-
Step 1
Write a good resume prior to applying. Don’t throw a resume together in a few minutes to apply for a job you know is closing tomorrow. A well thought out resume goes a long way to getting the position you really want. If you are prior military, it is okay to use military terminology on your resume when applying for these types of positions.
-
Step 2
Learn about the military installation where you want a job. Learn what sort of jobs contractors (that work on the installation) do. Usually contractors are fairly specialized and have a narrow range of professional job openings plus the necessary administrative staff members. Go to the military installation’s home page and find a list of the contractors that work on the installation.
-
Step 3
Research the list of contractors. Eliminate contractors that have positions to which your skills are not well-suited. Read literature on the company and visit the company website where applicable. Learn about the company so you can show which of their needs you will meet as their employee.
-
Step 4
Use friends, family members and any professional contacts to learn about potential jobs available. Most job openings are filled without being advertised. This type of networking will provide you with the best job leads.
-
Step 5
Make personal contacts with the company. Go to the military installation and talk to the hiring manager to learn about openings. Give your resume a face. If you make a good impression, the resume you present the company may go to the top of the pile.
