How to Stain Furniture

When my husband and I were just starting out, we discovered that wood furniture is cheaper when it has not been finished (or "nude"). Discouraged at first, we soon learned just how easy it is to stain or refinish wood furniture yourself.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Wood furniture
  • Stain
  • Clean paintbrush
  • Sandpaper

Step1
If the furniture has never been finished, you will first need to sand it down with sand paper, rubbing it on the surface until the entire piece is smooth. There should be no rough or jagged areas.
Step2
If the piece has previously been stained or painted, you will need to buy a stripper (a liquid that when applied will remove the stain or paint). Afterward, resand the piece.
Step3
After it is completely dry, dust off the piece of furniture to make sure the second coat of stain will go on completely smoothly. All drips and uneven streaks will show, so take your time.
Step4
Allow the second layer to dry. If necessary you may apply more coats. If you are satisfied, find the perfect place for it in your home and enjoy.
