The great outdoors can be very exciting for many cats. However, it is not safe to let your cat roam freely as cars and other animals can pose a threat. You may want to teach your cat to walk on a leash. This will provide your cat with exercise and mental stimulation. Walking on a leash does not come naturally to cats so training does require patience. Most cats can learn over time.

Step 1

Put a harness on your cat and allow him time to get used to it. Cats cannot slip out of a harness the way they can slip out of a collar. Also, a harness is safer if your cat gets tangled up on something.
Step 2

Attach a lightweight leash to the harness. Remain indoors and allow your cat to walk around the house while dragging the leash behind him. Keep a close eye on your cat in case the leash gets tangled on something.
Step 3

Go outside with your cat on the leash. Let him become accustomed to the outdoors before attempting to walk. You may have to do this several times before your cat gets comfortable.
Step 4

Begin walking with your cat on the leash. Coax your cat with treats. Walk in a quiet area so your cat does not get spooked. Repeat as necessary. Eventually, your cat will learn to follow you.
