How to Use Bobby Pins

It's always nice to find that some little inconsequential invention like the bobby pin has many other uses. They are really handy little things if your know what to do with them. Here are some clever ideas for doing something new with your bobby pins.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Bobby pins
  • Wire
  • Glue
Step1
Use a bobby pin when you need a tie clip. Pull your tie through the back loop and then clip the back piece to your shirt. It will hold it securely all day without showing. It can also hold up a hem and, although it won't be invisible, it will be much less visible than a drooping hemline. Use one to clip money inside your clothing, too.
Step2
Try using a bobby pin for a lost zipper pull in a pinch. You can also use them to hold shirt cuffs together when you've lost a cuff link. Insert it through the cuff link holes and bend it or twist it into place. Use it to fasten a loosely woven scarf around your neck or to keep a scarf tucked under your suit or blouse.
Step3
Hold phone, stereo or TV wires in place with bobby pins. Thread the wires through the end of the bobby pin and push the pin under the baseboard. If you need to, you can clip the ends off so it fits under there more easily. You can do this with molding along the ceiling or around doors and windows, too.
Step4
Close chip bags, cereal bags and cracker packages within the boxes with bobby pins to keep them fresh longer. Use them for hooks to hang up small utensils such as potato peelers or measuring spoons. At Christmas they make great ornament hangers, too.
Step5
Kids can sew on wide weave fabrics such as burlap with bobby pins. Thread yarn or embroidery thread through the loop and tape off the ends. You have a safety needle a small child will be safe with. Kids (and adults) can also use them as bookmarks and paper clips.
Step6
Use bobby pins as barrettes. Embellish them with glue and beads, fabric and antique buttons or whatever else you have hanging around. They are better for children's fine hair than barrettes and so simple to make. This is a good craft project for kids - simple and inexpensive to make. Use your imagination and you may come up with even more bobby pin solutions.

Tips & Warnings

  • Very small children shouldn't be given bobby pins to play with without supervision as they can easily be swallowed.
