Tips & Warnings:

  • Brush your dog on a regular basis.
  • Go to a professional groomer on a regular basis.
  • Use a lint roller after you have brushed your dog.
  • Don't overdo the brushing or the use of the Furminator.
Step1
The first step is to feed your dog a quality food. There is some good dog food and there is also dog food that is not made with very good ingredients. Feeding a quality food will keep your dog healthy and improve your dog's skin and coat.
Step2
Add supplements to your dog's diet. Some really good oils to add to your dog's food are olive oil, safflower oil and cod liver oil. I tend to rotate the oils. One week I'll add olive oil, the next I'll add a little safflower oil. When you add oil to your dog's food, you have to make sure that you don't add too much.
Step3
Take your dog to a professional groomer on a regular basis. A professional groomer can get rid of a lot of the fur that your dog sheds. Groomers have high velocity dryers that can blow a lot of the undercoat out. Many groomers now offer shedding programs that can really help.
Step4
Use a Furminator. Furminators are excellent grooming tools that can get your dog's undercoat. The Furminator is a number 40 grooming blade that can rake out the undercoat that a brush or comb would miss. It really does a great job reducing the amount of fur that your dog sheds, and I strongly recommend them.

on 4/8/2008 I really believe this is really true, just as humans loose their hair whenever they don't eat healthy. Now I know we need to feed our dogs healthy food also, not junk food as adults do. We should start caring about ourselves also, as much as we care about our dogs.

on 4/12/2008 I use a coarse hacksaw blade to get the same result. I have used it on three dogs and a cat and they all love it. It also makes their coat nice and shiny.

on 4/7/2008 I am doing the high-quality food, combing, the cod liver oil and the groomer.
Now, I'm going to try the furinator for one of my kitties.
Hopefully, I won't bleed to death when she sees it! :P
Thanks!

on 4/7/2008 We have a dog with a,heavy, double coat of fur. Sheddding has always been a problem. We live in costal nc and the summers are hot,so we decided to have her shaved. It's cooler for her and we found that she doesn't shedd nearly as much until her coat has returned to it's normal lenght. Time for another shave!
