Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Things You’ll Need:
- Scheduled visit date
- Travel gear
- Seminar reading book
Step1
Choose which campus you will visit. Most students visit the campus closer to them; but some students may be interested in the culture of one or the other. Annapolis and Santa Fe are the prettiest towns of each regional culture. Santa Fe is a town of mountain climbing, weaving, jewelry-making and other crafts, while Annapolis's main draw is its harbor with crabbing, sailing, and the U.S. Naval Academy.
Step2
Contact the Admissions Office of the campus you've chosen. The telephone number for Annapolis is either 410-626-2522 or 1-800-727-9238. The telephone number for Santa Fe is either 505-984-6060 or 800-331-5232. Email for Annapolis is admissions@sjca.edu, and for Santa Fe is admissions@sjcsf.edu. Make plans for a certain set of dates and learn when to arrive.
Step3
You will visit a Freshman Seminar, which is an evening discussion class. You will not be allowed to speak (nor in the daytime classes you visit), but you will be much less bored if you have read the evening's discussion topic. Find out the evening's reading from the Admissions Office, or see link to the main calendar below in Resources.
Step4
Pack appropriately for the weather, and bring something dressier for seminar or a Friday night lecture. Although the rule to wear ties or skirts to seminar has been relaxed, students are expected to dress more formally than usual.
Step5
When you arrive, take the campus tour, use your meal tickets and attend classes. Use your time to talk to students if you can. Listen to the conversation around you in the Dining Hall, and watch how students spend their time. Read campus bulletin boards and check out the often unique graffiti on brick walls by the coffee shop.
Step6
Attend your interview appointment and ask more questions. Use this time to enjoy the ambiance of a place like no other on earth (except, maybe its sister campus) and to understand if you would be happy here. According to Aristotle, happiness is the goal of virtue!
