When following a lower carbohydrate diet, you will have to learn the difference between total carbohydrates and net carbohydrates.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Carbohydrate Food Grams
  • Fiber Food Grams
  1. Step 1

Know the total carbs. Write down the total number of carbohydrates in one serving of the food you are trying to calculate the "net" carbs for.

  2. Step 2

Know the total fiber. Under the total carbohydrate count, write down the total fiber grams in the same serving.

  3. Step 3

Subtract to find the net. Subtract the total fiber grams from the total carbohydrate grams. This will render the "net" carb count for the food.

  4. Step 4

Example: One food serving contains 10 grams of total carbohydrates and 3 grams of total fiber. The "net" carbohydrates for the servings will be 7 grams.

Tips & Warnings
  • On low carbohydrate diets, the "net" carbs are the ones you count.
  • For higher carbohydrate foods, try adding additional fiber to the serving.
