Tejo is a very popular game throughout Columbia, similar to horseshoes. There is one major difference, however: the target is not just a metal rod, but a metal cylinder which contains an explosive charge. Hitting the target triggers a loud bang, to the general amusement of players. Tejo is often played all afternoon, and is accompanied by beer.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Set up a wooden container, 3 feet wide and 4 feet tall, angled at about 45 degrees toward the players. Fill the container with moistened dirt.

  2. Step 2

In the center of the dirt, embed and bury a steel tube approximately 8 inches wide, and place inside it or triangular piece of paper filled with gunpowder. These triangles are called "mechas." Blasting caps are also an acceptable substitute.

  3. Step 3

Each player throws a metallic disc toward the target, attempting to strike the explosive. Different weights of discs are available, like balls at a bowling alley.

  4. Step 4

Four to six people take turns. If no one strikes the cap, the player who gets his disc closest to the explosive earns a point. If a player sets off the explosive, they get 3 points. And if they strike the exact center of the tube, without touching the sides, they get 6 points.

  5. Step 5

Tejo involves beer. Drinking is essentially mandatory. Teams are often sponsored by beer companies.

Tips & Warnings
  • Explosions are very loud, with generate smoke and flying clay. This is part of the game.
