A day at the races is a lot more fun when you leave with more money than you had when you went in. You can improve your chances of winning by applying some basic, quick and fun handicapping. Theres no need to spend hours pouring over a daily racing form, apply the steps below and enjoy your day at the races!

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • A daily racing form or another source of past performances e.g. BRIS, TSN.

Step1
Eliminate the losers. Eliminate from contention any horse that has not raced in the past 45 days. Also eliminate any horse that did not show any ability in its last three races (for example: it did not pass any horses, lost position at every call finished in the last third of the field).
Step2
Eliminate any horses who's trainer shows a year to date win percentage of three percent or less. Eliminate any horses who's jockey shows a year to date win percentage of three percent or less.
Step3
Pick the contenders. The following applies only to horses that have not been eliminated. Circle any horse that is dropping in class from its last race. This is determined by claiming price or if the purse of the last race was higher than today's race. These are the top class rated contenders.
Step4
Write down the top speed rating from the last three races for those horses not yet eliminated.
Step5
Circle the top three speed rated horses in the field. These are the top speed rated contenders.
Step6
How to bet. If you have circled four or more horses according to speed or class, pass the race. If there are three horses circled according to speed and class bet the two highest paying horses to win and and exacta with the lowest paying horse over the two highest paying horses. Example: Horse A is 2-1, Horse B is 4-1 and Horse C is 5-1, bet horse B and C to win and two exactas, the A over the B and C.
Step7
If there are two horses circled according to class and speed bet both to win.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take a set amount to bet on the races, do not bet any more than this.
  • Do not lose more than you take to bet on
  • Do not chase your losses, there is always another day!
