Do you have a little patch of empty land you'd like to see beautified? Would you like to help your community by offering students the opportunity for a hands-on learning experience at the same time? This article will tell you how.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a plot of land
  1. Step 1

First, you'll need to evaluate your garden and decide what you'd like to do with it. Do you want a vegetable garden or a flower garden, or a combination? How much of your land do you want to dedicate to your project? Do you want a particular layout or do you want students to participate in the planning process?

  2. Step 2

Contact your local government and find out the land use regulations for the area you'd like to plant. Also make arrangements for your local utilities to find out where your underground utilities are located. Many areas have a call before you dig hot line.

  3. Step 3

Contact local schools and tell them what you'd like to do. Many schools would be delighted to participate in such a valuable learning experience. The local chapter of the Future Farmers of America would also be a resource. There may be a horticulture department at a local college which may have some students who would be interested.

Tips & Warnings
  • Outline a schedule and create a written list of rules you'd like everyone to adhere to while gardening on your land. Be clear so that there is no room for misunderstandings.
  • Check with your insurance agent. Make sure that you understand what your homeowners insurance will and will not cover. Make sure that you have sufficient liability insurance in place.
