Everybody used to think that shuffleboard was a game for the elderly that was played at parks. Right and wrong they were. Shuffleboard is actually a game for all ages. Currently smaller, tabletop versions are gaining much popularity at bars all over the place. If you have ever seen people stooped over the table shouting at pucks as they slide to the other end, but had no idea how to play the game, here is how you do it.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You'll Need:

  • Shuffleboard table
  • Quarters
  • Spare time

How to Play Bar Shuffle Board

  1. Step 1

Get acquainted with the board. Most bar shuffleboard tables are about 15 feet long. You will notice that they have the numbers 1,2 and 3 labeled at each end. This is how you tally points.

  2. Step 2

Ready the board for playing. First insert your quarters to start the game. There will usually be a cleaning brush for sweeping the table top; use it to clean off the table surface.

  3. Step 3

Lubricate the surface. Now you will notice there is a plastic sand shaker near the table. This is so you can coat the table and make the surface slick prior to playing. Simply hold the shaker about a foot above the table and evenly coat the entire surface of the table with a light coating.

  4. Step 4

Game on. There are eight pucks that come with shuffleboard, four red and four blue. Each player slides a puck down the table, alternating until there are no more pucks. The key is to get your puck to stop on the highest number.

  5. Step 5

Tally up the score when each round is finished. When the pucks run out you simply tally each puck’s points. (For example, 2 blue pucks on 2 equals 4 points awarded to blue player for the round and so on.) If a puck slides the edge of the three-point section and part of the puck overhangs the edge, then it counts as four points. Use the scoring buttons on the side of the table (red and blue) to tally each player’s score for the round.

  6. Step 6

Identify the fouls and remove the pucks. There is a foul line drawn about a yard below the one-point market. Any pucks that land in this area are to be removed from the table until the next round of play commences.

  7. Step 7

Start the next round. Once all pucks have been used, it is time to switch sides. Head to the other side of the table and the color that did not start first now goes first from this side. Who ever scores fifteen points first wins. You can also play 21 point games but those usually cost about fifty cents more per game.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is all in the wrist.
  • Don’t bet money until you are sure you can win.
