Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- Dog bed
- Patience
- An area for the dog, out of the way of foot traffic.
Step1
Pick a spot for the dog bed out of the way of foot traffic. A dog won't want to go in a place to sleep where it feels like it is going to have to move every five minutes to get out of the way. Try in a corner of the room or under a table. Make the bed where the dog is still able to see people in the most frequented room of the house, but not where he would be in the way.
Step2
Put a favorite toy in the dog bed so the dog will start to get the idea that this is its safe place.
Step3
Put the dog in the bed. Repeat a few times "your bed" while pointing at the bed and speaking directly to the dog. Tell the dog to "stay" then walk away.
Step4
If you want the dog in the bed at that particular time but the dog leaves the bed, bring him back and put him back in the bed. Repeat Step 3 again. The dog may leave the bed a few times, just keep bringing him back and putting him in the bed while repeating Step 3.
Step5
The dog will take a few days to get it down, but with repetition he will get it in no time and will be sleeping in his own bed.
Step6
After the dog knows where his bed is, when you want him to go into his bed use the words "Go in your bed" while speaking directly to the dog and pointing to the direction of the bed.

on 1/29/2008 I like your suggestions. Who wants to sleep in the middle of traffic, right - LOL ;)
We used to put our dog bed right on the floor next to us. Worked out well.
