If your teen child is feeling uncomfortable about their body size, it's only natural to want to know how to help a teenager lose weight. Healthy habits will last a lifetime and the teenage years are a great place to start if the family hasn't always been so healthy.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • understanding mind
  • healthy foods
Step1
First, you need to make sure that your teen wants to lose weight. Nothing makes you feel worse than someone else suggesting that you need to lose weight if you are more than happy with your body. If you are absolutely certain that your teenager wants to lose weight, then you can be more direct in your suggestions. Otherwise, you may want to just change the family's habits without mentioning "weight loss"
Step2
Have a family meeting to discuss "getting healthy". The focus on this meeting should not be weight loss. You should take the blame yourself and say that it's you that wants to get healthy and you think that others should follow.
Step3
Stop buying junk food. Make sure that your fridge and cupboards are stocked with only healthy foods.
Step4
Make sure that your teenager brings a healthy snack for after school. This is a time when many students will hit the vending machine (and all the junk food inside) because they are hungry and don't have anything healthier to eat. Be aware that while fresh fruits and veggies may be healthy, they may look like "dieting" to other teens, which may make your teenager uncomfortable. You may want to pack healthy snacks that don't look so healthy.
Step5
Try serving food from the stove instead of having large serving dishes displayed on the table. Studies have shown that if food is in front of you, you are more likely to eat it.
Step6
Get more active as a family. On weekends, plan activities that allow the whole family to be active. Or you may want to take a brisk after-dinner walk every night.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try to discourage your teenager from trying fad diets. This often don't work and lead to more weight gain after.
