An ocean cruise can be the adventure of a lifetime, but can also surprise travelers with the various associated costs, from fuel surcharges to overpriced beverages. There are steps you can take, however, to save money while still having a wonderful experience.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Try to find a travel agent specializing in working with a particular cruise line or lines. Some of these agents have "preferred" status with a cruise line, meaning they’ll be given a slight discount over other agents.

  2. Step 2

Consider bringing your own wine and/or alcohol. Cruises tend to charge on the high end for drinks, especially wine, so even paying a "corkage" fee you’ll still be saving cash. Clear hard alcohol—such as vodka—can be easily substituted for water in a container, with no one being the wiser.

  3. Step 3

Along similar lines, buy a "soda sticker" if available on your cruise should you tend to indulge in soft drinks a great deal. The sticker entitles you to unlimited sodas on your cruise for a one-time upfront fee.

  4. Step 4

Avoid solo travel. As most cruise fares are based upon double-occupancy, cruising is no bargain for the solo traveler.

  5. Step 5

If you’re not going to be spending much time in your cabin anyway, settle for an "inside" (windowless) cabin, rather than splurging on a costly one with a window and/or balcony.

  6. Step 6

Arrange your own flights if air travel is involved rather than buying into an "air-inclusive" cruise trip. If anything, flights arranged by the cruise lines will cost you money, not save it, and you never know what kind of itinerary they’ll put together.

  7. Step 7

Likewise, try to plan your own private excursions at the ports rather than joining the expensive cruise-operated tours. You’ll save money and probably be able to travel with a smaller group as well.

  8. Step 8

Look at your contract carefully, as well as any bills you receive while cruising. Some cruise lines include a daily "service charge," which may make you reconsider how much you were thinking of tipping certain staff; also, some bars already include a 15 percent service charge.

  9. Step 9

If you cruise often, look into discounts with various lines for their frequent customers—and some offer other bonuses as well. And be on the lookout for special offers announced onboard for future cruises.
