San Francisco is home to some of the most brilliant vintage shopping in the country. From tiny dress shops to all out bargain warehouses, fabulous finds from days gone past abound throughout San Francisco.
Determine what type of vintage you are looking for. Glam furs and Pucci dresses can be found at Union Square shops, while super funky platform boots will likely be on Haight Street. Having an idea of what style you're going for will narrow down your neighborhood quickly.
Step2
Consult with a local dress shop or do an Internet search on Vintage in San Francisco. Shops like Thrift Town in the Mission cater to serious bargain hunters, whereas Torso in Union Square is strictly upscale. Great vintage neighborhoods are the Mission District, Fillmore Street and Haight Street.
Step3
Know your wardrobe. All too often shoppers get swept away when shopping vintage, and end up buying pieces that will never be worn. If you're after a terrific gold brooch to wear with a your new winter coat, keep yourself from getting the orange poncho that seems right only in the moment.
Step4
Be realistic. Sizes in vintage are much different than sizes today. Marilyn Monroe was known as a size 12, but according to her measurements, she would be a size 6 today. Only buy things that accommodate your body, and have a great tailor to take in and shorten as needed!
Step5
Double check quality. Check to make sure seams are tight, buttons are in good shape and zippers are in functioning order. Also check for stains and funky smells too, especially when buying vintage coats.
