How to Pick a Rice Alternative for a Wedding

Rice is out when it comes to wedding celebrations. It’s hard to clean up in addition to being bad for the environment, including birds and other foraging wildlife. Many venues no longer allow it in favor of a more organic solution.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

How to pick a rice alternative for a wedding

Step1
Talk to a representative of your wedding location. Generally it’s walking out of the ceremony that the happy couple is pelted by uncooked rice. Check with where you are getting hitched to find out if rice is permitted. If it is not, decide whether you want to see if you can toss your rice leaving the reception (if you’ll be leaving before the guests) or even while entering the reception.
Step2
If rice is not allowed at any of your wedding locations, look into more environmentally friendly materials. Craft stores and online sources often carry dried lavender buds, potpourri, small bottles of bubble solution or bird seed. All of these can be broken down in an outside environment. Potpourri and lavender will smell great when people walk on it, bubbles will virtually disappear and bird seed, well, it feeds the birds and other wildlife in an outdoor setting.
Step3
Whatever alternative you choose, buy enough for each of your guests to get a handful.
Step4
Buy decorative pouches or some other type of container to distribute your tossing material.
Step5
Distribute your packages to guests and make sure they know what to do with it and when.

Tips & Warnings

  • While you can use some other container, sheer pouches are best because of the decorative nature as well as ease in emptying, and they can even be reused for a satchel at another time.
