Stop your iPod from synching and disconnecting immediately when you plug it into your Windows PC. Read through the whole article first to familiarize yourself with the steps before proceeding.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Uninstall the version of iTunes that you have installed. This can be done using the Add/Remove Programs utility found in the Control Panel on Windows XP computers. Your iTunes library will not be removed, though it is advised when doing any kind of work on your computer to back up your files.
Step2
Reinstall iTunes if you have a copy saved on your computer or download the latest version from Apple.

Step3
Plug in your iPod. iTunes launches and will notify you that it is synched with a different library and if you want to erase it and synch with the current library. Click Erase and Sync. This will give you time to complete the next step.
Step4
As it is erasing and synching, immediately go to the Music tab of the iPod and uncheck Sync Music. Then go to the Summary tab and check Enable disk use. Click Apply. What this will do is keep your iPod connected to the PC to use as disk storage. You must use the Safely Remove Hardware utility found on the System Tray to eject your iPod now. Upside is that you can sync what you want onto the iPod.
