Now that designers are participating in capsule collections and labels are becoming more mainstream, it’s no surprise that the line between commercial and conceptual is blurring. Today’s designs, whether at discount stores or high-end boutiques, are being paired together because of their similar approach to style. Mixing and matching designer with discount provides a way to play with fashion in a unique and individual manner. Below is a guide on how to do it right.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

When buying designer pieces, always choose traditional styles with a little bit of edge. For instance, if you buy black pants, opt for versions with either an exaggerated leg or narrow cut. Pairing pieces with additional design elements helps complete the look.

  2. Step 2

Likewise, when buying discount look for simple lines, colors and styles. Blouses, tops, jeans and leggings are always sure bets.

  3. Step 3

In the past, mixing designer and discount usually meant a white tee with a great pair of slacks, or a simple cardigan with a sleek pencil skirt. Today’s discount is much more fashion-forward. Select items that have a certain appeal. Patterns and prints are fun (discount) when paired with a great black suit (designer), while a fantastic high-end dress can be worn with a gorgeous and cheap silk scarf.

  4. Step 4

Some of the best discount buys are jeans, pants and T-shirts. Pair these basics with great designer coats, sweaters, blouses and shoes for a sleek and sophisticated look.

Tips & Warnings
  • Discount and designers stores also offer great accessories. Be sure to look at the sales racks for great necklaces and handbags.
  • If it looks cheap it probably is. Stay away from bright colors, tacky fabrics and busy patterns.
