Anyone who has a dog tries to take a picture of them at one point or another. Whether or not you can get the dog to focus and sit still so you can actually get the picture is another matter. Here is a great way to get that fidgety dog to sit still long enough for you to get a great shot.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Dog treats
  • Patience
  • Camera

Step1
Introduce the dog to the camera. A lot of dogs are scared of what they don't know. Put the camera lower then the dogs eye level and have the dog sniff the camera.
Step2
Once the dog gets introduced to the camera, go and sit in the spot that you want the dog to sit in (even if it's on the floor).
Step3
Call the dog in front of the spot that you want him in and while you are sitting in the spot, make the dog comfortable. Have him sit down, scratch him behind the ears and on his neck and stroke his back.
Step4
Put a dog treat in the palm of your hand and close your hand around it. Have the dog sniff your hand so he knows its in your hand. Use the hand that you are not pressing the camera button with.
Step5
Stand in front the spot and have the dog sit exactly where you want the picture taken. Again, have him sniff your hand with the treat in it and at the same time tell him to stay.
Step6
Slowly back away from the dog, finger poised on the button to take the picture. Do not turn away from the dog. As you back away, alternate between telling him to stay and saying "good dog" and do so in a calm, soothing voice.
Step7
Show him the dog treat in one hand as you focus the camera with the other. Again, tell him with a calm, soothing voice to stay and tell him he's a "good dog."
Step8
Take the picture. If the picture does not come out good the first time, keep repeating Step 7 until you get a good picture. Immediately after taking a good picture, give him the dog treat and tons of praise.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not use a harsh, condescending tone. The dog will end up looking scared and will lay down and cower instead of being in the position you want him in.
