Can't afford the ten piece band for your wedding celebration? Don't want to ask Uncle Fred to man the stereo while your guests boogie the night away? A wedding DJ may be the perfect choice for your event. Here are suggestions for how to get the best price and successfully negotiate with a wedding DJ.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Research on competitors
  • A selected date and location for your event
  • Awareness of the the details of your wedding site in regards to a DJ's needs

Step1
Before attempting to negotiate with a wedding DJ, make sure you have consulted multiple DJs in your area, and are well acquainted with the services they offer, as well as their price structures.
Step2
Details about your wedding site greatly affect the demands on a wedding DJ. Will she have to bring her own PA system? Is there free parking available for her van? Does the site require that she set up her equipment hours in advance of the event? Make sure you are armed with this information before attempting to negotiate a price with a wedding DJ.
Step3
Prepared with your research, approach the DJ you wish to negotiate with, and explain to him that while he is your first choice for your special day, you were hoping he could discuss his quoted price with you.
Step4
Often, the simple question "Can you do any better on your price?" will cause a wedding vendor to offer suggestions on how the price can be brought down.
Step5
Many DJ packages offer features that you simply don't need. A DJ's quoted price may include special lighting, multiple microphones or a second DJ to act as the night's MC. Point out the add-ons that you are not interested in, and ask how that will affect a DJ's price.
Step6
Make sure the DJ is aware that you have done your homework. Point out the better price you have been quoted by a competing DJ.
Step7
Wedding sites often charge couples an additional fee for a "vendor meal." Ask a DJ if he would prefer to bring his own snack, thus freeing up some cash that can be added to the DJ's fee. Often, a DJ would prefer the additional forty or fifty dollars to a plate of grilled chicken.
Step8
Cash talks. Ask the DJ if she will offer a discount if you pay her fee in cash. Make sure you still insist on a contract if the DJ agrees to this option, and always get a receipt when any money changes hands.
Step9
Put your money where your mouth is. Tell a wedding DJ that if he agrees to the price you are requesting, you will place a deposit and sign a contract on the spot.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be respectful and courteous when attempting any negotiation. A wedding vendor is more likely to work with you on the price if she genuinely wants your business.
  • Prime wedding times, like a Saturday evening in June, may cause a wedding DJ to refuse to negotiate his fee.
