Does your closet seem full of items you no longer want or need? Perhaps some simple organization would make getting dressed in the morning a simpler affair. Follow this easy guide on how to declutter a closet.
Start by removing everything from your closet. It will be much easier to assess each item if you have to consider it before placing it back in the closet. When the closet is cleared of all clothing and shoes, take the opportunity to sweep or vacuum the floor thoroughly.
Step2
Item by item, decide if the article of clothing is still in style, fits you or is something you still enjoy wearing. A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself if you have worn the item in the past year. With the exception of formal clothing, items not worn in the past year should be discarded.
Step3
Sort your clothing seasonally, and pack away items that do not fit into the current season. Make sure clothing is clean before placing it in storage containers.
Step4
Stock up on appropriate hangers for clothing. Trouser hangers with clips that hold the pants or skirts in place store multiple items, taking up very little precious hanging space. There are also many over-the-door storage devices that accommodate multiple pairs of shoes and handbags. A simple nail can be used to hang belts and ties inside a closet. Stacked tiers on the floor can also hold many pairs of shoes, and make footwear easier to find.
Step5
As you hang items back inside your closet, try to hang similar items close together. That way you will always know where in the closet to reach for dress shirts, casual pants or dressy dresses. Formalwear should be stored in the farthest reaches of your closet.
Step6
Consider professionally storing specialty items like wedding gowns, elaborate costumes or fur coats. Chances are you will not be reaching for them often.
Tips & Warnings
Don't just throw the old clothing away. Consider selling it at a yard sale, organizing a clothing swap party or donating the items to charity.
If storing seasonal items in a basement, make sure to use water-tight containers, which will protect your clothing against flooding and bugs.
