Step1
First use common sense a brand new set of expensive boots or bag that sells for $1000 and costs less than $300 it is likely a fake.
Beware of the source if it is a purse party or from the trunk of a car it is also a fake unless you heard of a recent heist somewhere, in that case you might want to call the police preferably before you buy the bag.
Kiosk, garment districts, flea markets and Chinatown are not likely to be selling the real thing
If its new and being sold on Yahoo or eBay and selling for a fraction of the price it is a fake.
Step2
Louis Vuitton is known for their high quality, stylish products produced from the highest quality materials made by master craftsmen in Europe and the United States.
So first examine the item closely looking for any signs of shoddy manufacture, the leather should be soft and supple not grainy, anything pvc is a giveaway
The stitching should be small and even not pulled or shabby looking.
Handbag lining that is glued not stitched it's a fake.
Boots should have leather lining, check boot details at LV website they show pictures and give detailed descriptions
LV patterns should line up evenly on both sides of the item.
Monograms should be on heavy brass and be crisp and clear
If it's made in china it's a fake know where your product is made.
Do your research if the item doesn't look the same or is not listed on the manufactures site its a fake.
Many fakes are well made and can be difficult to identify if you want to be sure a good website to check out is My Poupette for a small fee they will check out items for you.
Step3
Remember many counterfeit products are made in sweatshops or with child labour for extremely low wages resulting in injuries and poverty. Think before you buy. If you want to save money on high end luxury items, replicas are the way to go they won't copy the monograms of the original designer but you get the look with out the price and lets face it how many of us can tell the difference.

on 1/28/2008 Very good solid advise.I was down on canal street this weekend and was approached by several people offering outrageous deals on handbags that should have cost a lot more. However I realised that its fake products like these flooding into our country from China that is putting us on the path to ruin so my wife will have to wait until we have the money to buy the real thing.Sorry honey...
