Decide if an E-Learning/Distance Learning Course is for You

Are you curious to know if an online course would fit your circumstances and lifestyle? Many colleges offer distance learning classes in order for more individuals to attain a degree. Here are some ways to help decide and prepare you for an online class.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Self-Motivation
  • Desire to learn
  1. Step 1

Feeling that I am apart of a class: If this is very important to you than an online course will not fit your needs. All communication is through the internet and class participation can be limited at times.

  2. Step 2

Task Scheduling: If you often get things done ahead of time and need little reminding to do so, then your ready for an online course. You have full responsibility of being aware of due dates and the teachers will not be reminding you. Most classes will not give an credit for late assignments unless otherwise agreed upon.

  3. Step 3

Classroom Discussion: This can be very limited due to the nature of online discussions. You are communicating through your writing and not verbally as you would in a traditional setting. If you feel confident in your writing skills or even with actively trying to communicate this way, then you are ready.

  4. Step 4

Directions for an assignment: If you are someone who has to have directions explained to you by an instructor, then this may be a problem. You have to be able to read the instructions and take if from there. Of course you can ask your instructor or other classmates if you are confused about a particular instruction, but it won't work for you if you need consistent verbal explanations.

  5. Step 5

Personal Schedule: Do you have around 10-15 hours/week to work on an online class? The nice thing about one of these classes is that you can work on it whenever YOU have the time.

  6. Step 6

Using the internet: You should have a basic understanding of the using email and the web. If some new technologies are unknown to you, then you need to be willing and ready to learn new concepts.

  7. Step 7

Self Motivation: This is a very important attribute to have when taking an online course. You may have to even get your work done early in order to ask questions on things you don't understand. You, and only you, are held completely responsible for turning in assignments on time.

  8. Step 8

Distance Learning is a great option for continuing education or completing a degree. It's wonderful for at-home mom's, full-time employees, or someone just looking for a change in setting. Hopefully you have been able to come to a conclusion on deciding if this is the right course for you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Must have average knowledge of reading, writing, and communication skills.
  • May have to initiate and ask for comments on assignments if you need them.
  • Be cautious about some online courses because they may require you to take a test or two on campus. You can e-mail the instructor before you register for the class if this is a concern for you.
