Dog's anal glands can get impacted. You often see this when they wipe themselves onto the carpet out of discomfort and trying to relieve this feeling. It is costly and annoying having to take them into the vet only to pay 30.00 or more each time they 'squeeze' and release their anal glands and relieve the pooch of his discomfort and your home of the sickening smell emitted from an impacted gland. The normal occurrence is for the anal gland to release when they defecate. Unfortunately, smaller dogs have a tendency to get impacted and the gland stops emptying when it should ending in a gland that seeps out on furniture, leaks onto the carpet and stinks up the place in general. This home remedy can help lots of little accidents from happening.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • A few squares of toilet paper.
  • A dog with impacted anal glands.
  • A private quiet place to do this.

Step1
Catch your uncomfortable pooch. Take to a quiet place.
Step2
Hold the dog's shoulders between your ankles or calves with the dog's head behind you to keep him from snapping or biting.
Step3
Lift tail into the air with one hand and fill the other hand with a good sized piece of toilet paper and press and pinch against the anus and up towards the tail.
When you press and pinch either side at the same time with the tail up, the glands will release out onto the tissue and relieve the pooch of their discomfort. Wipe clear brownish fluid away from anus.
Step4
Clean the mutt's hind end with soap and water and be sure to double that with your own hands. Flush the paper down the toilet.
Step5
You're all set. The carpet is cleaner, sofa smells better and the pooch feels less like he has to lick himself constantly to relieve the backed up gland.

Tips & Warnings

  • At first you will be nervous that you may hurt your dog but he will let you know if you are hurting him by the way he squirms or makes little sounds. The faster you go about this the less pain he will be in and the sooner he will feel relief. We try to do this about once a month when needed. My vet was the person who taught me and suggested I save money by doing this for our dog at home.
  • Be very careful not to have the glands (which may be VERY impacted) squish up into your face or eyes as the smell is not the best to have near your nose.
