The IBM ThinkPad T42 is a wonderful laptop. It has lots of bells and whistles, but is missing one thing vital to some users. For many that have older peripheral devices, i.e., Palms, cameras, etc., the T42 is missing the trusty serial port to connect these items to the computer. One way around this is to purchase a USB to Serial Port adapter. The better way is to purchase what IBM and Lenovo call the Mini-dock. Not only does the mini-dock give you that serial port, it also adds two extra USB ports, plus gives the security of locking the laptop in place to prevent theft.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • IBM ThinkPad T42
  • Mini-Dock

Step1
Purchase a mini-dock. Lenovo lists the part number as 287810U. While Lenovo sells these, the best place to buy is eBay as the prices are very reasonable.
Step2
Look to make sure that the mini-dock includes both the key and the power adapter. The mini-dock uses a different adapter than the laptop for a power source.
Step3
Put the dock on a flat surface, such as your desk. Slide the dock base to its most extended position.
Step4
Attach the power cord and any devices you wish to run. Not only can you hook up serial and USB devices, you can also add a monitor, keyboard and mouse.
Step5
Line the tiny arrow centered on the lid of your T42 with the arrow on the dock.
Step6
Press gently until you hear the laptop click into place.
Step7
Open the lid of the laptop and turn on the power. Alternatively you can turn the power on with the button on the mini-dock.
Step8
Enjoy your ThinkPad T42 as you would any desktop computer. Use the key to lock the laptop to the base, if desired.

Tips & Warnings

  • The mini-dock is simple to use, but if questions arise, the manual can be downloaded from IBM (see Resources below).
  • The same mini-dock can be used with a wide range of IBM ThinkPads. Check the documentation for compatibility.
  • Secure the mini-dock to the desk if you are worried about laptop theft. Lock the ThinkPad in place by using the key.
