Step1
Open your eyes to your children.
Be sure to NOTICE them, SEE them, HEAR them. It's very easy to get caught up in our day, chores, issues. Don't let these things distract you from giving your children the attention they deserve.
Step2
Set aside time for family time with your children.
It's important to set aside time that your children can look forward to as that special time they know is reserved just for them, even if it's just once a week.
Step3
Pick your battles with your children.
It's very easy to complain about things your children may not be doing "right" as we all have our preferences. Remember, however, that it's important to choose carefully and address only those items that really concern you, or your REAL concerns will get lost in a forest of mass complaints.
Step4
Discipline without force.
Abstain from physical or emotional abuse (name calling, shouting, any type of aggressive expression) when disciplining your children. Instead, use reason and punishments that involve the loss of privileges.
Step5
Develop an open line of communication built on trust and honesty.
You should start this when they are very young if you can. Parenting is not about being a superhero or perfect. It's about expressing how much you love them and how much you want them to have a safe, great life.
Step6
Practice patience.
We tend to think certain stages of our children's lives will go on forever. The reality is the stages pass and they grow oh so quickly: There will be a time when they WILL sleep through the night, they WILL be able to stop crying on their own, they WILL be able to go to bed without a bottle, and they WON'T require as much help from us. So, when you're at your wits end, remember, whether you want it to or not, things WILL change, and this too shall pass.
Step7
Hugs, hugs, hugs.
Be sure to give them at least a gazillion a day or more.

on 1/26/2008 You made great points. When you hear them sometimes the proof is actually in seeing. Get down to their level and try to see the world from their eyes. It will keep you level headed and open your eyes.
