It seems that almost everyone knows how to flip a coin. However, flipping a coin is not as easy as all that and should be approached with careful consideration and a steady hand.
Choose a coin. The first thing you need to do when you are practicing a flip is choose a coin. Typically, people will flip either a quarter or a nickel but what works really well are the dollar coins--not too big and not too small and conducive to a nice flip. However, any coin will do.
Step2
Steady hands. While your hands need to be steady when you're doing the flip, they also need to be free of any debris, oil, moisture and anything else they can get in the way of a good clean flip.
Step3
Choose a still environment to get your flip off effectively. If you are outside in a swirling wind or on a downward slope and your stance is off-balanced, your flip could go awry.
Step4
Position the piece. When you are ready to flip, position the coin in the right spot. Typically, a flip will take place from the thumb tucked underneath the index finger, with the index finger protruding slightly from the rest of the closed fist. If you've done a good flip you'll know it because your index finger won't go anywhere. All the motion should be from the thumb with the energy focused from nail to hand.
Step5
Clear out. It is not an atomic bomb or anything like that, but so long as you can get up a good flip and you get a good head over tail over head over tail, then you have succeeded in mastering the flip of a coin. Now, catching the flip? That's another article.
