When leaving your present job, it can be a sticky situation for everyone involved. Although you want to appear both tactful and professional, it can sometimes be difficult, particularly if you and the company part ways under less than pleasant circumstances. However, it is always important to leave with at least two good references, whether from your peers or superiors. If your employer does not know that you are planning on leaving, it can make asking for references even more challenging. But, by using a bit of finesse and charm, it can be relatively simple to get the references you need.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Begin by thinking about your coworkers, their personalities and your relationships with each of them. Although you may be great friends at work, they may not be the best reference for you. Remember that potential employers will be most impressed by someone who can speak articulately about your strengths as a worker.
Step2
If you do not want your employer to know that you are looking for another job, ask your potential reference to meet you for a cup of coffee or lunch outside of the office. Then explain to them that you are applying for a new position and ask them if they would be so kind as to be a reference for you. If they hesitate or do not look pleased that you asked but agree, it is probably safe to assume that they will not give you a glowing review and you should find another reference.
Step3
If your employer knows you are leaving, feel free to send an email to your coworker detailing your professional pursuits and asking them for a reference. If they do not respond, that usually means no.
Step4
Once you have a possible job offer in the works, do your references the courtesy of letting them know that they may be contacted by someone in regards to your application. That way, they will be prepared for the call or email and can start thinking about how they might recommend you.
Step5
Be sure to thank all of your references for their kind assessment of your skills and for helping further your professional goals. Your acknowledgement of their efforts will certainly help you should you need to call on them again for a glowing review.
