Step 1
Spirituality can decrease the negative effects of disease, speed recovery, and increase the effectiveness of medical treatments. Faith is also thought to improve coping and provide comfort during illness. And religious attendance is sometimes linked with improvement of various health conditions. Some religious groups, such as Christian Scientists, claim prayer can cure any disease.
-
Step 2
Spirituality can be practiced in many ways. For example, prayer may be silent or spoken out loud and can be done alone in any setting or in groups. Regular attendance at religious services may involve prayer which focuses on one's self or on others. In this type of setting, the entire congregation may be asked to pray for a sick person or the person's family.
-
Step 3
Spirituality can also be practiced without a formal religion. Meditation and seeking meaning in life all involve spirituality. Some people express their spirituality by spending time with nature, doing creative work, or by serving others.
-
Step 4
The ability to find meaning in life can be helpful when dealing with cancer, even though it cannot cure the disease. Spirituality may also help us accept death, both our own and of those we love.
-
Step 5
Many people believe that when others pray for their recovery, it can have a beneficial affect on on their situation and hasten cure. However, there is no scientific proof that this is true. However, if the patient believes that it does, it could positively influence his/her recovery.
However, relying on this type of treatment alone, and avoiding or delaying conventional medical care, may have serious health consequences.
