Many people dream of working from home. It is alluring to think that you can earn money without having to get up early, dress and drive to an office which may be many miles away. However, having an office in your house or apartment is like anything else in life in that it presents its own challenges. One must possess the work at home mindset to successfully deal with the distractions, temptations and other negative situations that working from home present.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Self discipline
  • Support from family
  • Private space
Step1
Deciding this is what you want.

This may seem trite but the first thing you must do is have a desire to work from home. Many persons say they do but do not really mean it. Many workers like the separation between home and office and the interpersonal relationships working in an office or work center allows you to develop. You must be certain that you wish to work alone, from your home.
Step2
It is not what you may think.

Working from out of your house is far from a utopian situation. Indeed, if you try it for awhile you may learn that it is not for you after all. There will be a sense of detachment from others and a myriad of distractions that impact your work in a negative way. You must be of the mindset that your home is your office and, during working hours, treat it that way.
Step3
Dealing with intangibles.

Even though much modern business communication is performed by telephone and email, particularly with those persons in faraway cities, you will have irregular contact with your boss, co-workers, and possibly even your customers. Not being in the office, you will miss the day-to-day verbal interplay and human contact - - and perhaps not be able to sense or know when problems or changes coming. You must have the attitude that you can live with irregular face-to-face human contact and that the advantages of working from home are greater.
Step4
Much of this does not apply to me.

You may be a single person, own your business, or both. Even so, keeping connected is important and mingling with people out in the world is essential to you staying abreast of what is happening both in and out of your profession. If you isolate yourself, the world, and your competitors, will leave you behind. Your mindset should be that it is your job to stay plugged in to the rest of the world.
Step5
The upside.

This step should be obvious. You will save time and money working from home, plus you will be on your own turf in comfortable and relaxed surroundings. Automobile and clothing expense should be lower. You have a sense -- mindset -- that you are your own boss, even if your real boss is only a telephone call or email away.
Step6
Summing up the work from home mindset.

You are disciplined and able to stay focused on business. You recognize that working from a home office is a privilege many people do not have and are determined to not abuse it. You recognize that there are disadvantages to working in isolation but you have the self-motivation and will to overcome them. You are effective when performing solitary tasks and diligent not to let your absence from the office negatively impact your work in any way. You are committed to maintaining business relationships.

Tips & Warnings

  • Speak with your family when considering a work from home arrangement. You will need their support. It will not work if they are not comfortable with it.
  • You must discipline yourself to set a schedule and stick with it. It is very easy to waste a day by starting it with one innocent short errand.
  • Distractions can be a serious problem. Family may be constantly underfoot. The doorbell, telephone and television can ruin your day. You must, at the very least, have a quiet and private place to conduct business.
  • Your family will have to get used to the idea that, even though you are home, you are not available for errands, chores or play. You will have to get used to it as well.
  • Keep your professional and office skills current. It is easy to let continuing education and knowledge of modern office technology slide when working in isolation.
