There's a way for interested people to start an Internet blog, even without an audience--a website called Gather. You can also test your writing, enter contests, interact with others and show off your photos and videos. At Gather, you can gain the support of an inviting online community. It is yet another way to back up your data in a roundabout way. Follow these easy steps to get started building a virtual audience for your work using Gather.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Go to the Gather website (see Resources below). Click the "accept invitation" button on the left of the computer screen.
Step2
Fill in the information in the screen as needed. Be cautious not to use your "real" name unless it is just your first name. Fill in as much of the profile portion as you feel comfortable. Do not give out any personal information, such as where you live. Upload an icon as you feel comfortable. Remember, it does not have to be a photo of yourself.
Step3
Request connections with people that you think you could have something in common with. They will be prompted to read your blogging and view your photos. You can start by searching for the Gather guides if you do not feel safe with anyone else.
Step4
Start posting blogs or articles on anything you find interesting. It can be anything from how your day was, the weather, sports, politics, or just interesting facts or news finds. Some even like posting recipes or chat sessions.

This will draw more readers in. As readers comment, click on their name and on the left of your screen click "request a connection." Usually you can check the friend box. Leave a message if you wish, but this is optional.
Step5
The more often you post your articles, photos or videos and visit other active longer-standing members, the more comments you may receive and your reader base will grow.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can connect or disconnect with your connections at any time. There is no obligation.
  • Refrain from sending mass or spam emails, as this is frowned upon in most online communities.
  • Never post a photo of another person without their consent, including those of children.
  • Do not connect with those that make you feel uncomfortable or do not share your views.
  • Be careful to post only photos, videos and articles that you own.
  • Do not give out personal information.
