Mulled wine is a great winter tradition, best enjoyed in the company of friends. It's easy to brew, makes a great addition to a party and has all the benefits of red wine, plus a little vitamin C for good measure.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Large pot
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg
  • 4 cloves
  • 6 tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1 lemon, thinly sliced
  • 1 bottle of red wine (preferable a heavier type, like Cabernet Sauvignon)
  • Ceramic mugs

    How to Brew Mulled Wine

  1. Step 1

Pour the water, brown sugar and spices (cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg) together in a pot and bring to a boil.

  2. Step 2

Once the mixture starts to boil, remove the pot from the heat and add the lemon slices to the mix.

  3. Step 3

Let mixture stand for about 10 minutes.

  4. Step 4

Add wine to the pot, and heat the mixture for about 5 minutes, being careful not to let it boil.

  5. Step 5

Strain the drink and pour into thick mugs. The liquid will be hot, so use sturdy, ceramic mugs, not wine glasses.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't add the wine from the beginning or let it boil; too much heat will burn off the alcohol.
