Ever have that co-worker that demands an inordinate amount of your time? Do they show up in your office for hours at a time to just talk? How do you take back control of your work day and maintain a reasonable relationship with your co-worker? Here's how.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take a little time and reflect on why you think your co-worker is trying to spend so much time with you. Are they just needy? Did they go through some bad times recently? Are they lonely or bored with their work?

  2. Step 2

Think about the conversations with this co-worker that you do not like. Is there someone else that they could speak with?

  3. Step 3

Develop a schedule that makes sense to you. Detail the the times you are available to speak with this co-worker.

  4. Step 4

Set up a meeting with your co-worker. Be sure to let him know why you want to meet.

  5. Step 5

During the meeting, be direct and respectful. Ask them why you are getting so much of their attention.

  6. Step 6

Discuss the schedule you developed. If they agree to this, you're done.

Tips & Warnings
  • Once in a while, be proactive and visit your co-worker.
  • They may feel hurt by your rebuff. Be mindful of feelings and be direct, but kind.
