How to Use a Social Networking Site

Making a virtual connection is not difficult at all. There are several social network sites that will help you answer work questions, find people in your industry, or help you connect with long lost friends and former co-workers. Here's how.

Choose a Site

1. 
   Google search results for 'social networking sites'

   Choose a social networking site. If you do not have one in mind, utilize an Internet search engine such as Google.com to find one.

2. Review the site. Does it meet your needs? A site that you would use for personal non-work connections, such as Facebook, may not be effective for the workplace. You may want to use one such as LinkedIn.

3. Ask your colleagues and friends what site or sites they recommend.

4. Review the sites. Do the current participants appear to be people you want to connect with?

   Advanced search on LinkedIn

   For demonstration purposes, we will use the LinkedIn site. The first place to search for connections is your current workplace. Send invitations to each person you wish to connect with.

   Invitation example

   Send an invitation to connect to the people listed that you may wish to connect with.

   Individual search example

   Search for people you know, even if you are unsure of their current company.

   Asking questions

   Utilize your network to ask questions.

Tips & Warnings

• Respond quickly and enthusiastically to any requests you receive.
• Invite only those people that you want to connect with. Don't get caught in a "numbers race" just to boost your connection total. You want a trusted network, not necessarily a big network.
