Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Talk to your physical therapist about your particular problem. Ask what treatment plan will correct it. Set specific short-term and long-term goals. Your objectives should be realistic, especially when you choose a time frame for the rehab.
Step2
Cooperate fully with your physical therapist as he or she assesses your current level of fitness. Be honest, so that the PT can identify any potential health risks.
Step3
Ask your therapist to include range of motion exercises in your program. These exercises can help prevent joint stiffness associated with arthritis and other debilitating conditions. Gentle stretching exercises can keep your joints moving.
Step4
Ask about endurance exercises to increase strength. Be sure to discuss with your physical therapist what kinds of exercises might not be right for you. Depending on physical limitations and certain health conditions, not all older patients can do endurance exercises.
Step5
Be certain that your physical therapist is aware of any joint replacement surgeries you've had.
Step6
Remain committed to your physical therapy program, and you should be able to achieve success.
